Why $18? Each Hebrew letter has a corresponding numerical value. And the symbol חַי (chai) contains two Hebrew letters; chet (with a value of 8) and yud (with a value of 10). Together, they add up to 18. So, since chai means life, giving $18 symbolizes a celebration of life.
